Why does jacuzzi water turn green?
When your jacuzzi water turns green, it can be quite alarming at first. Green jacuzzi water looks unhygienic and is anything but inviting for a relaxing soak. Still, green water in a jacuzzi is a common problem and, in most cases, easy to solve. By understanding where the green colour comes from, you can act quickly and effectively and prevent the problem from coming back.
Algae growth
Algae develop when the water isn't disinfected properly. In warm water, algae multiply extremely fast when the chlorine or bromine level is too low. This causes the jacuzzi water to turn green and sometimes even feel smooth or slimy.
Metals in the water
This often happens when tap water contains metals or when parts of the jacuzzi, such as pipes or heating elements, corrode slightly. Once copper reacts with disinfectants, the water can turn green or blue-green in colour.
How do you identify the cause of green water?
If the water is clear but distinctly green in colour, this usually points to metals in the water. In this case, a product that binds and neutralises metals will help. Sometimes it's necessary to completely drain and refill the water, especially if the discolouration is stubborn. After refilling, it's important to carefully balance the water to prevent it from happening again.
Using a product that binds and neutralises metals makes sense if the water is otherwise still fine: normal smell, no slime, fresh water. The goal then is to keep the metals in solution so they can be filtered out. But if the discolouration remains stubborn, you've already made several corrections, or the water has been in the jacuzzi for a long time, draining and refilling is often quicker and more reliable.
When the jacuzzi water is green and also feels cloudy or slimy, algae growth is likely the culprit. In the case of algae growth, restoring the water balance is the first step. Bring the pH level back to the ideal range and make sure the alkalinity is stable. After that, shock the water with an increased dose of chlorine to kill all the algae. Let the jets run so the chemicals are properly distributed throughout the water. Over time, the green water will disappear and become clear again.
