A sand filter is a smart addition to your jacuzzi or hot tub, allowing you to enjoy clean and safe spa water for much longer. Water condition is extremely important. Without proper filtration and maintenance, bacteria can develop quickly, which not only harms water quality but can also pose health risks.

How does a sand filter work?

A sand filter ensures that the water in your hot tub is continuously filtered and circulated. The pump draws water from the hot tub and passes it through a filter vessel filled with special filter sand. The sand traps dirt, hair and other small particles. The filtered water then flows back into the hot tub.

Are chemicals needed?

A good hot tub filter is important: it keeps the water continuously circulating and removes skin oils, hair, dust, sand and other small dirt particles from the water.

Bacteria are controlled and removed using special chemicals. With the right combination of filtration, disinfection and regular water maintenance, the water stays clear and fresh for longer, meaning you need to fully refresh it less often.

Chemicals and filtration therefore complement each other: chlorine provides disinfection, while the filter keeps the water clean.

How do I maintain a sand filter?

A filter system needs less maintenance than you might think. Depending on how often the hot tub is used, you'll need to backwash the filter regularly. During this process, the system rinses the sand clean and immediately flushes the collected dirt out of the filter.
When is it time for a backwash? You can easily check this on the pressure gauge (manometer) of the sand filter:
    1. Note the starting reading: Check the value on the gauge as soon as you turn on a new or freshly rinsed sand filter pump. This is your personal baseline measurement.
    2. Check the increase: Has the pressure risen by 0.5 to 0.8 bar compared to this starting reading? Then it's time for a backwash.
Replace the filter sand in the tank every 3 years for optimal performance.
